Plan Your Day Ashore

Island cruises in the Pacific are built around the water and the land that rises out of it. In Hawaii you can stand at the edge of an active volcano in the morning and swim off a black-sand beach before dinner. Farther south, lagoons in Tahiti, Fiji and the Cook Islands are calm enough for first-time snorkelers, and villages still welcome visitors with dance, food and craft.

Saving money here is mostly about choices. Book activities directly instead of through a package, compare a few listings for the same reef or crater, and consider sailing outside the busiest holiday weeks, when ships are fuller and small tours sell out. Each port page lists bookable activities with their reviews.

Discount Shore Activities — FAQ

How can I pay less for activities in Hawaii and the South Pacific?

Compare several tours that cover the same sight, since a shared snorkel boat or a group island drive costs far less per person than a private charter. Booking directly with the operator often costs less than a bundled ship tour, and many beaches and town walks cost nothing at all.

Does the time of year affect what I pay ashore?

It can. Shoulder-season sailings, away from school holidays and the busiest winter weeks, tend to bring fewer passengers per port, more open seats on small-group tours and less pressure to pay for a premium option at the last minute.

Do I need to book snorkel and boat trips in advance?

For small-group lagoon tours in Moorea and Bora Bora, or snorkel cruises in Maui, booking ahead is sensible because boats fill on ship days. Beach time and island drives can usually be arranged after you step ashore.

What if a tender port is cancelled for weather?

Several ports here, including Kona, Bora Bora and Rarotonga, rely on tenders, and swells can stop them. Tours booked independently set their own refund rules, so read the cancellation terms and choose operators that refund when the ship cannot land passengers.
