Fiji, Vanuatu & the Southwest Pacific Ports

These ports appear on voyages from Australia and New Zealand and on longer Pacific crossings. Villages, markets and church choirs are as much a part of a port day as the reefs, and many activities are run by small family operators who welcome direct bookings.

Fiji, Vanuatu & the Southwest Pacific — FAQ

Is it respectful to visit a village on a shore excursion?

Yes, when the visit is arranged by the community or a local operator. Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, remove hats in villages, and ask before photographing people. In Fiji a small gift of kava is a traditional courtesy on organized visits.

Which of these ports are easiest to explore on my own?

Port Vila, Nouméa and Apia all have markets and waterfronts close to where passengers come ashore. Rarotonga has a bus that circles the island in both directions, which makes a self-guided beach day simple.
